“Smoke and Sparks”

The McConway & Torley Commission and other paintings

This series of paintings was commissioned by McConway & Torley, LLC, the world’s leading producer of railroad couplers, based in Pittsburgh. The company dates back to 1869 and is the only facility that still pours hot metal within “Steel City” limits.

The original commission was for ten paintings, but an eleventh was added to the installation in the final stages of the project. Three extra paintings were produced as the project unfolded: “The Melter,”“Loading Scrap into the Arc Furnace for the Third Heat,” and a new version of “Couplers on a Train.”
